The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is a network of European organisations working together to observe the oceans, to make the collected marine data freely available and interoperable, to create seamless data layers across sea-basins and to distribute the data and data products through the Internet. The primary aim of EMODnet is to unlock existing but fragmented and hidden marine data and make them accessible for a wide range of users including private bodies, public authorities and researchers.

The European Topic Centre Biodiversity and Ecosystems (ETC BE) is a Consortium of 24 European organisations with expertise in the topic area of terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity and ecosystems, working in partnership with the European Environment Agency (EEA) under a Framework Partnership Agreement for the period 2023-2026. Biodiversity and ecosystems is one of five strategic work areas in the EEA-Eionet Strategy 2021-2030.
The ETC BE will support EEA through the following activities:
- Support to the implementation of the range of EU directives, strategies and policies constituting the environmental acquis.
- Designing and providing support for monitoring requirements and approaches for tracking progress towards the implementation of the 8th EAP and European Green Deal, including EEA’s input to mid-term reviews of underlying policies, particularly the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, Farm to Fork Strategy, the Zero Pollution Action Plan, and the various sector policies.
- Contributing to integrated systemic assessments of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems focusing on effects under climate change and to mitigate climate change, on cumulative drivers and pressures on these ecosystems, as well as socio-economic implications of solutions.
